Lecture on Ocean Exploration
The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology offers “Exploration at Full Ocean Depth,” a public lecture on the science of the deep ocean on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. OIMB is in Charleston, and the speaker will be in England, but the event, like so much else these days, is online. It is free and open to all.
The speaker is Dr. Alan Jamieson of the University of Newcastle on Tyne. He is a world authority on the biology of deep ocean trenches, and was the leader of a recent expedition that visited, for the first time in history, the deepest point of every ocean on the planet. His talk will provide the scientific backstory to the upcoming Discovery Channel program “Expedition Deep Ocean.” Jamieson’s discoveries include the world’s deepest-living fish, giant amphipods in the Mariana Trench, and the presence of plastic in animals, even at great depths.
To view the lecture, e-mail Craig Young at cmyoung@uoregon.edu. Put “OIMB public lecture” in the heading. You will be sent a link to the online event.
