The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Seminar Series has moved online for the duration of the pandemic.  Next up, on Thursday, Oct. 29, 3:30 p.m., is a presentation entitled “The Northwest Fisheries Science Center Observer Program: What is it and how does it work?”

The speakers are Christa Colway and Kate Richerson of the Observer Program, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Their description of their topic:

“The Fisheries Observation Science Program at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center places field biologists onboard U.S. commercial fishing vessels that target or incidentally catch West Coast groundfish species. These observers collect biological samples and data on fishing operations, catch composition, protected species interactions, and, most importantly, the amount of bycatch incidentally discarded. Observer data play a key role in the management of groundfish stocks and the recovery of many depleted stocks. We’ll provide an overview of the program, the data we collect, and our collaborations with other institutions and researchers.”
