Rocky Habitat Listening Session

Oregon is updating its policies concerning coastal rocky habitat areas for the first time in 25 years. This is providing an opportunity to designate certain special rocky habitat areas for conservation to safeguard local treasures while ensuring accessibility for the community and visitors.

Community engagement will be crucial to the success of this effort.  A chance for south coast residents to learn more about the process and provide input is coming up online on Friday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m. 

On the south coast, Oregon Shores is working together with the South Coast Rocky Shores Group; PISCO (Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans, at Oregon State University); and Shoreline Education for Awareness (SEA, based in Bandon), to put forward proposals for “site designation” for Blacklock Point, Cape Blanco, Rocky Point, and Crook Point, along with Coquille Point in Coos County. These groups are encouraging local communities to contribute to proposals that will go to state agencies and decision-makers for review and approval. 

This listening session from 5:30-7 p.m. will give community members the opportunity to provide input about these proposals via Zoom.  Participation is open for all, but the primary focus of this session will be on the northern Curry County sites, so residents of Langlois, Port Orford, and Gold Beach residents on November 13th are especially invited.  Those attending will learn more about the rocky habitat area designation process, hear a proposal for each site, and have a hance to engage in an open dialogue about each area.
